A strong relationship with your teacher will show in your daily interactions with them. If you make an effort to always participate in class, during off days, your teachers are more likely to be lenient. If you have an absence, be sure to make it a point to communicate the circumstances of that absence. Teachers are more likely to work with you and respect you if you show them that same respect.
Having a strong and healthy relationship with your teachers is also an easy way to boost your college application. A good connection is the first step to a fantastic letter of recommendation. If the teacher feels like they know you, the letter of recommendation will come across as more genuine. However, these outcomes beg the question, how do I build a strong relationship with my teacher?
The first step in building that relationship is to interact with your teachers. Volunteer to help them clean up. Participate in discussions. Ask questions—either in-person or by email. If you have a free moment, chat with them. Like you would with any other relationship you were trying to build, show interest in them. Teachers are people too, and they have their own interests and lives. Spending time getting to know your teacher is one of the easiest and most important parts of building that relationship.
Another way to build that relationship is through your coursework. Several examples of doing that are by doing your best to excel in assignments, doing the extra credit, and even assisting others. Regardless of innate talent, something that will earn your teacher’s respect is your drive.
If you have an English paper due, send your teacher a draft beforehand and ask for feedback. Even if they won’t give feedback (and it never hurts to ask) it shows your ambition and dedication to learning and doing your best. If you do poorly on a math test, ask to schedule a time to go over the questions you missed—even if there is no extra credit or you are moving on from that unit. Showing dedication toward learning will make you shine.
A strong relationship with your teacher is truly invaluable. It makes your life easier and better, and it will show when it comes to your teachers’ willingness to help you and your classroom interactions.
